Sitting on a tree...
“Death,” Luna called into the air, “Are you nearby?”
As if to diffuse through the white concrete wall behind her, a figure emerged. Cloaked by a rugged black cloth, the entity’s posture was straight, seemingly unfazed by the supposedly solid wall. This ‘Death’ carried a walking ‘stick’ — more like a thick column of wood, crooked enough to reach the tall figure’s chest. With each step, the walking aid echoed at every knock at the lecture hall’s wooden floor
“What did you have in mind?” the figure spoke slowly, almost with a British accent.
“I trust you and your team could take that on?” Luna said, while pointing towards the window and I assume something existed past it because I could not see anything else but sky and its natural greyness.
“Of course, my queen,” Death said, curtly bowing at Luna’s direction before floating upwards towards and through the ceiling.
I just sat on one of the seats of the lecture hall, unsure really what I felt at the moment. I was frozen on my seat and so were my classmates. If a fire alarm were to go off, we knew to walk calmly out of the room and towards the designated assembly areas. When instead blaring alarms were to boom the corridors, hide under the tables. But what was the proper response to a figure that appeared and disappeared through a scientifically known fact of impermeable structures?
I looked around the classroom, made eye contact with my best friend and I saw him mouthed, “what’s going on?” I shrugged as a response. One moment we were all hurriedly stuffing our brains with information for an exam. Then the next, a roomful of students’ attention was gazed on Luna; a quiet girl most of the time, participates barely in recitations but would get the higher grades at the end of the trimester.
Luna reached behind her ear towards what could be a Bluetooth headset since she began talking, giving orders in a strict manner.
“I have sent all of you my communiqué. We’re dealing with something far greater than we’ve encountered before.”
The now stranger girl browsed her classmates’ faces and as if to had a sudden realization, Luna began to speak in a different language. Upon close inspection, it was Korean. Tracing Luna’s eyes through the crowd, she spotted Kwon. Remembering he was Korean, Luna altered to French flawlessly. Obviously, whatever she was saying, she did not want us to hear about it.
“Understood?” Luna commanded as she reverted back to English. She had this authority aura around her and I couldn’t remember the last time she was like it.
“Eve, you make the calls. Claire Anne, find Erik.”
“Erik Mcbride?” my seatmate, Amber, asked. He was this guy who had a streak of pranks done upon professors, not necessarily his but basically whoever was in the vicinity.
And as if on cue, the lecture halls door opened wide, taking everyone’s attention except for Luna’s.
“Sorry sir!” Erik exclaimed with the intention of disrupting the class. His plan was probably to destroy the examination atmosphere that Mr. Woods preferred while he browsed through nude photos in his laptop, which the screen was conveniently faced away from us— it was only speculation by some students (and by some I mean Erik), as Mr. Woods tended to be redder when we hand in our papers.
“Sol!” Luna exclaimed at Erik’s direction.
“Hey!” Erik said, “I thought we already agreed that I’ll be called Erik from now on.”
“Look!” Luna face sharply turned towards the window.
“Oh…” Erik squinted at the direction. I looked back towards the empty scenery and squinted as well, hoping that I would see what Luna saw. Alas, nothing.
“That’s easy. I’ve downed that one before. Get Eve to make the calls.”
Luna said something in Erik’s direction in … Spanish? Well, it was European. The dirty blonde prankster furrowed his eyebrows together as if to not understand the situation.
“Wait, wait,” Erik stopped Luna in her sentence, “Why are you speaking Greek?”
With an open hand, Luna made a wide arcing gesture towards their classmates. Erik’s eyes followed.
“Haha,” he said, looking back at Luna, “Idiot.” To which Luna rolled her eyes in their sockets.
Erik placed his hands on his waist, scheming. When hanging with him, you tend to see his tell. With a bright smile, he looked towards his fellow students.
“Everyone here knows of my deep, an obsession quote and quote by some of you, crush for Luna,” Erik said, showing an open palm towards Luna. Luna’s eyes widened for a second and stared at the floor timidly. It brought a lot of smiles, not yet laughter due to the marvels occurred prior to Erik’s majestic entrance.
“So for my next magic trick,” Erik’s key phrase had been said, bringing spectators’ lips closer to the ear. If not annoying teachers or flirting with Luna, Erik’s other hobby was magic tricks, a lot of which made us scratch our heads.
“I’ll be kissing Luna. And we all know that love is the greatest magic of all,” Erik said with a broad grin. Luna froze evidently as everyone clamored from his or her seats. I watched interestedly at the two, partly wanting to join in the ruckus that Erik had created.
“Okay, okay. Calm down,” Erik settled his overexcited audience, “Three.”
Erik grabbed hold of Luna’s arm, pulling her towards him. Luna’s glasses were distraught on its owner’s face.
“Two,” the space between their bodies disappeared and Erik’s hand nestled the girl’s chin.
“One,” practically everyone was applauding or cheering. Luna’s eyes shut as Erik’s face approached ever closer. Then at the climax of everyone’s expectation, they simply vanished.
